Underwater

When I was a girl
at the local pool
we tried to talk underwater
pretending we were mermaids.
Mostly we got mouthfuls of chlorine.
I tried this in the ocean
and mostly got mouthfuls of saline.
Communication is fraught with misunderstanding.
The talking heads say nothing.
I've decided to be a merrow, a selkie, a nereid
and just be silent
underwater.
