Ditch

You’re in the army now
you’re not behind the plow
you’ll never get rich
by digging a ditch
you’re in the army now.

You may have abandoned the ditch,
but here’s the saddening hitch,
you’ll still be digging deep -
enough to make you weep;
take heed of the date up there,
‘twas a year that you may be aware,
must have come as a terrible wrench
that the ditch had become a trench.
