E3 Fivepence for One, Twopence for Two
E3. "Fivepence for One, Twopence for Two" – What item would you be willing to pay full price for instead of getting the 'deal/sale' price? And why is that item so important to you?
Any book that sounds interesting, I would pay full price to own. I just bought the latest book by a local author. “A Complete Idiot’s Guide to being Wonderful”. Now with a title like that, how would you not buy it?
This author is a casual friend, he’s in a book club with me, and is a retired English teacher here. He also wrote a book about his growing up in NE Montana, “Treading Air”. Good reading.
So now after buying this book, mentioned above, I have to do an article about his book signing for the newspaper. I did make notes and have a few pictures. But how do you capture the magic of someone reading their own poetry?
There are titles like:
"The Speed of Dark" - shadows and light
"Grouch" - about a horse he had as a boy
"Pea Wars" - recess in Montana with cottonwood seeds
"Jesus in a Jetstream" - pictures in those vapor clouds left behind by the jets
And then when Tom read a poem titled "Twenty Degrees Below Zero" and the line 'no sound but the squawk of snow beneath my boots' well, I was instantly in that world. I was remembering walks in -20°weather. I remember that sound. It is like no other sound on earth.
