Trail

Trail

Beside our house it runs,
the gravel path, the rail trail,
once the iron road to elsewhere
but now the trains have gone.

A country walk it simulates
and a welcome to the wild
for creatures from the woods around
come sightseeing in the town.

And yet I swear, on darkest nights
a phantom locomotive wails.
