Who are we? Where are we going? Should we even care?

Subspace
Since my revelation concerning the expansion of the universe, a new idea has entered my head.

Considering the balloon analogy, if we are living on the "surface" and space-time itself is streatching, then what is casuing the expansion? In the case of the balloon, there's the a third dimension underneath the two-dimensional surface that expands at a smaller rate than the surface area. So could there be a 5th dimension underlying space-time? It could be the cause of the expansion.

The use of this fifth dimension, which I will call subspace, could be important, if it exists. In the balloon analogy, to get from point A to point B one must go along the surface. However, since the surface is curved, the fastest way to get from A to B is through the balloon. And this method of travel would shorten any trip of any distance because the curvature is constant over the entire surface.

I think that the curvature of the universe could be derived somehow. If it could, then the properties of the subpsace could also be derived. If it exists, then intersteller travel could be possible or at least revolutionize methods of communication.

Of course, travel through subspace could be as difficult as it would be for those in the two-dimensional example. The first problem is actually making a hole in space-time. Just as a hole must be made in the balloon, a hole must be made into subspace. Second, travel through subspace would probably require new understandings of direction and other dimensions. Can anyone even imagine a hyper-sphere (a four dimensional sphere)? It's mind-bending, I'm sure.

Just as a 2-D being would have trouble navigating through a 3-D world effectively, we would have trouble understanding this new "direction" that defies all conventional explanation. It would be neither up, down, sideways, or anything in between.

Hell, if subspace does exist, it might explain why we havn't intercepted any alien transmissions. They're all using subspace to communicate, not radio. It would probably be a very long time before we'd pick of their archaic radio signals anyway. If alien radio signals are anything like our radio signals, we'd probably not consider them intelligent enough to notice (think alien Jerry Springer, ha ha).
