Be Prepared to Write A typical writing night for me, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, is grabbing my book bag and heading for the garage (heated in the winter, of course ). A few of my close friends here at Writing.com know I refer to this as “Garage Night.” Hubby works on his 5 year ‘fix-the-blazer-up’ project, and I haul about 7 pounds of books onto a special table I use, shared with nuts, bolts, an occasional sparkplug or so, and most likely a belt of some sort. Sometimes I pull up my hood or somehow cover my head as sparks spray from the grinder. The only thing that really keeps me out of the garage is the smell of paint fumes. Otherwise, much of my writing is completed amongst oil pans and toolboxes. Just as my hubby’s garage is prepared to tinker around with vehicles, my book bag is loaded to the max with all the tools I need for the night. Being prepared to write is more than sitting down with a pad of paper, a pencil, and hopefully an idea or two. That would be like my hubby with a garage containing a vehicle, a few tools, and no auto manuals. He may get lucky and not need anything more, but it’s better to be prepared than being without and feeling stuck. Okay, you’re thinking, just what is in that book bag that is so gosh darn important? Well, besides my notebook, pencils, and handy pencil sharpener, it includes (in order of importance to me) my thesaurus, rhyming dictionary, and regular dictionary. While I rarely use my dictionary, it does come in handy once in a while for correct pronunciation and things like that. My thesaurus gets the biggest work out while my rhyming dictionary follows close behind. Hmmm…. That doesn’t sound like 7 pounds of book, you think. Heehee! But I also like to bring a few stimulators along to help trigger an idea. By stimulators, I mean ‘writing books’, ‘poetry books’, ‘magazines’, ‘picture books’…. Anything that might suddenly give me a great idea. It’s amazing the things that will open the imagination. I may read a poem about a tree and suddenly think one up on my own, completely different. I might read a poetry form other than traditional that I like and follow suit with my own words. The prompts are endless. @-->-- @-->-- @-->-- :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~: Here are some pretty awesome places for Newbies to visit…

As a member of the 'noticing newbies' committee, I sometimes get bogged down with the amount of depressing poetry. I know it's a teenage thing, but sometimes I could scream! I think it's a great idea to encourage newbies away from desperate poems and to challenge their energies into improving their writing. Keep it up! Lynne. Thanks, Lynn. Yes, when I was a teen, I wrote about that kind of stuff, too. LOL! I'm glad I don't to have to go through all that emotion anymore. It can really be tough. Poetry is a good way to release some of those feelings. Submitted by Nikola~Thankful Library Lady : Cubby, I love the happy colors of the newsletter! Poetry forms--what a great topic! I write a lot of poetry, but really know little about different forms. Some of the items you featured will be of great value to those of us that are no longer newbies as well! ~Nikol Thank you, Nikol! Writing various forms can certainly be a challenge, but what an accomplishment when you are finished. I'm glad you like my 'happy' colors. @-->-- @-->-- @-->-- :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~: This month’s question is… Which writing tool do you find to be most helpful other than the basic paper, pencil, and computer document? :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~: Next week's host is our lovely esprit Have a question or comment for the Editor? http://www.Writing.Com/main/newsletters.php?action=nli_form To stop receiving this newsletter, go into your account and remove the check from the box beside the specific topic.
