Passing
11/28/02

He passed back and forth, but he was never there.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.

A misconception.
A misplacement of thought, thought to be an accident.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.

The meaning
escaped
while he was on the other end of the night.

We saw
him look;
looking high, looking low, looking close, looking afar.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.

A coin in the masquerade of dollar bills
may have held his answers.
A heart in the shape of a buxom girl
may have held his map to a peaceful eternity.

The masses adjusted life so he could be happy
and he never knew
until it disappeared.

He passed back and forth, but he was never there.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.

If a day tripped him,
he kept going.
If a lie escaped him,
he made it tough not to believe.

He showed
he cared
if he had nothing to care about.

His body holds secrets.
Everyone loves to know a secret.
Yet noone knows his.
Does he understand why?
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.

Stories fit like patchwork.
His steps are covered guesswork.
He gained attention but never paid.
Some will say he's not the same
but they'll never know
from all he's locked away.

A quick pass on a radar screen.
Everyone's too important to recognize his importance.
Quick to jump, quick to judge.
Noone appreciates his significance
when he's whittled down to nothing.
He's had dreams about today.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.
He passed back and forth, but he was never there.
