Upgraded members and above have the option to set up access to their Writing.Com email from mobile devices (such as smart phones, iPads, tablets), their computers via email software (such as MS Outlook) or offsite email services (such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail). This tutorial will show how to setup various devices and services using both the IMAP and POP3 options provided by Writing.Com.
iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch ▼
1) Go to Settings and scroll down to Passwords & Accounts.
2) Go to the Add Account area under the Accounts header.
3) On the next screen, choose Other to create the Writing.Com email.
4) Tap Add Mail Account.
5) Input your name, Writing.Com email address, Writing.Com password and an account description. Tap the Next button in the upper right corner.
6) On the follow up page, keep the default setting as IMAP (rather than POP). Use oms.writing.com for both the Incoming and Outgoing host names. For the username in both sections, use your full Writing.Com email address - that's your Writing.Com username with @writing.com at the end. Under "Incoming", your password should automatically be in its place, but you will need to enter it again under the "Outgoing" section. Tap Next to submit the server information.
7) On the final screen, make sure Mail is slid to On. If you want to store notes from the iPhone's "Notes" application on Writing.Com's email server, slide that to "On" as well. Tap Save to complete the setup and store the account.
8) Your mail system is all set up. Go to your mail application, choose your Writing.Com account and enjoy your Writing.Com mail offsite!
Android Devices ▼
1) Go to Settings and scroll down to Accounts.

Tap Next to continue.
7) The next page is for Outgoing server settings.
Set the SMTP server as oms.writing.com.
For Security Type choose STARTTLS (Accept All Certificates)
Set the Port to 587.
The Require sign-in option must be checked.
Your username should be left as your full Writing.Com email address.
Your password should have transferred from the previous screen.
Tap Next to continue.
8) On the final screen, choose the preference you'd like. It's important to be sure sync email from this account is checked! Tap Next to continue and then tap Next again to finish.
Your Android mail is all set up. Access it via the Email app on your device and you can enjoy your Writing.Com mail offsite!
Amazon Kindle Fire ▼
1) Go to Apps screen and tap the Email app to open it.
2) From the bottom menu, tap the icon, then tap Account.
3) Again from the bottom menu, tap the icon, then tap + Add account.
4) On the following "Select E-Mail Provider" screen, tap Other.
5) Enter your full Writing.Com email address and password and tap Next.
6) On the next page for Account Type, tap IMAP.
7) On the following Incoming server settings page:
Your username should be left as your full Writing.Com email address.
Your password must be correctly entered.
For the IMAP server enter oms.writing.com.
For the Security type use TLS (always).
For the Authentication Type choose Plain.
Set the Port to 143.
There should be no IMAP path prefix and none is needed.
Tap Next to continue.
8) On the next page, you may be asked to Accept or Decline the email server certificate. Tap Accept to continue.
9) The next page is for Outgoing server settings.
Set the SMTP server as oms.writing.com.
For Security Type choose TLS (always).
Set the Port to 587.
The Require sign-in option must be checked.
Authentication type should be Automatic.
Your username should be left as your full Writing.Com email address.
Your password must be correctly entered.
Tap Next.
10) On the next page, you may be asked to Accept or Decline the email server certificate. Tap Accept to continue.
11) Choose the preference you'd like for checking email. Manually is recommended.
12) On the final screen, enter your display name for the email account and a nickname (optional). Click View your inbox to complete the setup process.
Hotmail ▼
1) Go to Hotmail.com and login to your Hotmail account.
2) On the left hand side, choose to "Add an e-mail account."
3) Once on the next page, click the Advanced Options link. This needs to be done because you need to change the mail server.
4) Input your email address, username, Writing.Com password, and change the the mail server to oms.writing.com.
5) Check the box that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)." Leave the other box checked.
6) Click next.
7) Now you will see a screen where you can choose either to save it in your inbox or a new folder. Either option will do. There is another area to choose what your writing.com messages will look like in your account. Again, any can be chosen.
8) Next click the Save button.
9) Just go back to your mail account and your Writing.Com email will be there!
10) To be able to send email from your Hotmail account as your Writing.Com email, you will need to go to your Writing.Com email and choose the email from Hotmail to verify your account. Once you click the link in the email, you can send from hotmail as username@writing.com.
Yahoo! -- Updated 6-25-2019 ▼
1) Go to Yahoo! and sign in to your email account.
2) On the right hand side of the page, there is a there is a gear icon. Click the gear icon. Click More Settings.
3) Once you see the navigation list on the left hand side, look for Mailboxes and click on it. In the center column, find the section titled Mailbox List, and click on the Add Mailbox button.
4) On the right, a section opens titled Select Email Provider with a list of supported email providers. Click on Other. As of June 25, 2019, Writing.Com is not listed as a supported email provider.
5) Follow instructions as they come and after each step click the "Continue" button on the bottom left.
Step 1: Account Name - (Recommended: Writing.Com)
Step 2: Name and Email - Name is used for your replies to emails sent from Yahoo! and the email is your Writing.Com email.
Step 3: Mail Server, Username, Password, Indicator, Options - For the mail server, use oms.writing.com. Username and password are those of your Writing.Com account. For the indicator, just choose a color in which your Writing.Com emails will appear and Options you can leave as they are.
Step 4: Always be sure that "Leave mail on POP server" is checked!
6) At the end of Step 4, when all information in put in, click on the Setup Mail Server button.
7) Go back to your Mail account and there will be a new section on the left hand side that says Check Other Mail and has oms.writing.com below. Click on that to add your writing.com email to your main Yahoo! email. The Writing.Com emails will be set apart by the color you chose as the indicator.
8) Now your Writing.Com account is set up through Yahoo!
Gmail -- Updated 6-25-2019 ▼
1) Go to Gmail.com and sign in to your Gmail account.
2) On the top right hand corner of the screen, click the gear icon and choose Settings from the menu.
3) From the top tabs, select Accounts and Import (currently the third tab from the left).
4) In the section titled Check mail from other accounts area (currently the fourth section of the page), click on the Add a mail account button.
5) A pop-up window will appear and say Enter the email address you would like to add. Input your email address (username@writing.com) and click Next.
6) Click to choose Import emails from my other account (POP3) and click Next.
7) The next screen says: Enter the mail settings for username@writing.com.
Check that the form has @writing.com after your username to make it look like your email. If not, add it. If this is not done, it will not accept your account.
Now input your Writing.Com account password. Note: If your password contains " or ', you must change your password.
In the POP server section, check that it says oms.writing.com (rather than mail.writing.com).
Change the port drop menu to 995 if necessary
Be sure to check the box that says Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server. so that your emails will stay both in your Writing.Com inbox as well as on Gmail!
7a) Check the box that says Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail.
Pick a label for incoming messages, such as “Writing.Com” or your WDC username.
Choose whether to archive messages without displaying them in the Inbox.
Click on Add Account.
The success message says:
Your mail account has been added.
You can now retrieve mail from this account.
THIS SETS UP COPYING EMAIL FROM YOUR WDC INBOX TO THE GMAIL INBOX.
Notes: It copies only emails from your Inbox. it ignores emails it has previously copied, and duplicates. It doesn’t copy all your email stored in folders.
8) On this screen it will now ask if you want to be able to send email as your Writing.Com email. The default answer is yes, and by leaving it as yes, you will be able to reply to your Writing.Com emails.
Would you also like to be able to send mail as username@writing.com?
o Yes, I want to be able to send mail as username@writing.com.
o No (you can change this later)
8) Click Next. On the next screen enter the name which you would like your emails sent with.
Name: __________
Email address: username@writing.com
O Treat as an alias. (default = checked)
Click Next Step.
9) Next it will ask you where you will wish to send your email through when sending email as your Writing.Com email. The easiest will be to use the Gmail server. Choose that and move on to Send Verification and then go to your Writing.Com email and either click the link in your email from Gmail or enter the verification code. (Both do the same thing.)
If that option doesn't come up, you can use the Writing.Com servers:
Send mail through your SMTP server
Configure your mail to be sent through writing.com SMTP servers
SMTP Server: mail.writing.com Port: 587
Username: __________
Password: __________
O Secured connection using TLS (recommended) (default = checked)
O Secured connection using SSL
Click Add Account.
10) After that you're all set to get your Writing.Com email in your Gmail account!
One important thing to keep in mind is that WritingML is a Writing.Com standard. While some elements of WritingML are included with offsite emails, it can only be fully parsed when viewed using the Writing.Com on-site email area.
