9.27.11 Psalm 63: 1-5
Psalm 63: 1-5

1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary
.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

These 5 verses are very inspirational. In a nutshell it tells us that it does not matter what the need is, you can still have peace in God.  It also tells us that we do not need to focus on our fleshly needs, no matter how 'important' it may seem. We need to focus on praising God.

This psalm was written as David was in the wilderness fleeing Absalom.  The term "wilderness" was used but it was not a place of tall trees and animals.The "wilderness" was a hot, sandy desert.  Understanding King David's setting and circumstances helps understand his psalms, like this one.

David roamed a waterless, dry (not producing plants) land. He was hungry and thirsty in the desert. There are no trees for shade in deserts. He had to have been hot and exhausted. But no, David had his flesh under subjection. David's was led by his spirit, not his flesh. He says, "my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee" in a land "where no water is".  He is saying, I would rather have you, God, than a drink of water or a morsal of food. David seemed to have a special insight into who God really is.
