The Stories of Lilith

As a special dedication to two lovely members of the group that go by Lilith , I am going to tell you yet another mythological story as the interesting fact for today. I'm sorry I haven't been on schedule. I am terrible with timing and honestly, I get stumped sometimes on some REALLY REALLY fun stories to provide. I don't like giving piss-poor trivia facts.

Anyway, this one goes back to the bible (I believe it has been mentioned lightly in previous posts), however there is a story that predates the one of Adam and Eve. This story based from the Hebrews and denied by Christians is that when God created man, he had to create him a partner. And so out of the same pure dust he used to make Adam, he created Lilith. As the story goes, Adam basically wanted to hump Lilith all day long and Lilith refused him. Adam, being infuriated, cried to big ol' daddy about his lack of sexual gratification. (Yes, this is me paraphrasing the story)

When Adam persisted and God told her that it was a necessary thing, as repulsed by him as she was (can you see why the feminists love this figure? She's probably the first New York City girl to walk the earth) she spoke the true name of God. By speaking the true name of God, she lifted off and flew away to where the demons resided. The story states some far off land, but one would imagine that this land may have been purgatory by the Hebrews and hell by the Christians (for those who have taken this story into consideration).

Well, just like the Three Wise Men traveling far and wide to carry out their duties, God sent three angels to Lilith to convince her to return to Eden. The first one failed. So the second one went out and told her the word of God, and that word was that if she does not return to Eden as Adam's mate she could never come back to Eden at all. She pretty much gave them the bird and went on about her business with the demons. And then, the third angel- an archangel named Samael- returned to visit Lilith one last time. He told her that God had said that not only she would not be allowed back to Eden, but she would also have to watch a thousand of her children die every day for eternity as punishment for her defiance against God himself now.

Now this is where different variations of the story branch off into a number of different "theories" or "fanfictions" you could say. Rumor has it, the reason she was so disgusted with Adam in the first place is because she had a... let's say a one night stand with the archangel Samael in Eden. Makes you wonder if they made up that whole part about angels having no reproductive organs to make it more PG for the kids, huh? During that whole time period where Puritans had a large impact on Christian beliefs, which was SEX WAS BAD AND A SIN (even if you were married, you had to do it through a hole in a blanket so as not to see the flesh. If a Puritan got any pleasure out of committing the act of "breeding" then it was considered a sin - no wonder that lifestyle died out so quick)

Anyway, the Hebrew version of this, and it is mostly known to be as a superstition now but plays an interesting role in the story of Lilith, was that out of vengeance for God, she decided to take the newborns of any descendant related to Adam as her own version of punishment. She would come in the night when the families were all asleep and she would suck the very life (or air) out of the newborns. This could be considered the first signs of SIDS (sudden infant death) in history if we wanna go by it from a literal stand point.

Another devious creature that was born from the figure and story of Lilith is the succubus. She was said to sneak into the homes of men and seduce them, as well succubi do. (Own personal theory here, perhaps that's how the incubus came to be - as children of Lilith?)

Through various translations and interpretations, correct and wrong, she also became known as a night demon. One of the first night demons. Blood became involved and immortality got involved too, so you can also see the early signs of "vampires" in these stories as well.

But on a more interesting note, despite the stories about Lilith, we find that there are quite a few religious figures or Goddesses carrying similar traits as our beloved Lilith through out history. It is difficult to say what came first and what is real.

And that is the fact of the day. Watch out, kiddos. Lilith moon might eat your heart out for breakfast!
