Shades of Night

Lights of urban streets

Glow to show the journey home

For the latecomers

Restless eyes open

Darkness shows time for sleeping

But alertness wins

Shadows abound here

In the silence of the night

Through the light's soft glow

The birds roost and sleep

But early hours waken them

And their new day starts

The gulls never sleep

Screeching, they are calling through

Muted dreamless skies

The velvet shades flow

From the evening to the dawn

Where they melt away.
