The direct immediate way to banish troublesome mental and emotional influences and disturbing psychological conditions is to firmly renounce them or keep the company of someone who is spiritual enlightened. If this cannot be done, concentrated self-training and beginning to live a balanced wholesome life can adopted. The yamas (restraints) and niyamas (intentional practices) of yoga are also very effective. Chose a lifestyle - a daily routine, sattvic selection of foods, how you earn your livelihood if necessary, wholesome social relationships, and daily time for your spiritual practices. This will give you the support to fulfill both your personal needs and actualize sustained spiritual growth. Nurturing devotion to God and regular, meditation to the stage of super- consciousness should be the basis of your devoted spiritual practice. Every morning cultivate flows of life force (prana) in the spinal pathway during your meditation practice and have your attention at the spiritual eye and the heart chakra during the day. Keep your tongue gently back and up throughout the day. This will help you maintain inner balance and will prevent excessive outward flows of life force and attention. |
