March 20 - A.A. Milne & Christina Rossetti - Theme: Wind
March 20, 2018
Today is a two poem day... the theme is Wind.
A childhood favourite... the author of Winnie The Pooh. A.A. Milne.

Wind On The Hill
By A. A. Milne

No one can tell me,
Nobody knows,
Where the wind comes from,
Where the wind goes.

It's flying from somewhere
As fast as it can,
I couldn't keep up with it,
Not if I ran.

But if I stopped holding
The string of my kite,
It would blow with the wind
For a day and a night.

And then when I found it,
Wherever it blew,
I should know that the wind
Had been going there too.

So then I could tell them
Where the wind goes…
But where the wind comes from
Nobody knows.

There is something flitting and fun within the 'seriousness' of this poem. This got me wondering about the man and his life. I did a little google search to see that he had also been a playwright, but it was his lighthearted verse inspired by his own son that took him up the ladder of success.

Later as I got older I read W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen The Wind - he starts off that book with a poem that I have always loved. It is by Christina Rossetti - finally someone who has not had their names blown away (A.A. and W.O.) I even memorized the second verse.

Who Has Seen the Wind?
BY CHRISTINA ROSSETTI
Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.
