I like to eat! It is probably easier to tell you what I don't like than what I do like. I don't like okra, curry, or boxed pretend food. Rice is never my first or even second choice but it has its place and doesn't gag me. I love potatoes in any form. I am blessed to live in Sonoma County California where organic produce and fresh-caught, wild seafood is plentiful. Oh! and sourdough bread is the best. I love veggies and fruits raw or cooked but I am definitely a carnivore, boring chicken being my least favorite, with lamb and beef at the top of the list. During the season we gorge on salmon or crab. I'm a pretty good cook, but not gourmet. I'm a peasant cook, stews, pasta, soups, roasts, Cornish pasties and of course barbeque. I'm always the one asked to bring the homemade pie to a potluck. Apple, rhubarb/strawberry, apricot, blackberry and lemon merengue top the list of requests. Though I'm Scot/English/Welsh by ancestry, I live in an area settled by Italians and have learned to cook Italian from the best. Having a Chinese/Hawaiian sister-in-law, I've learned to prepare some great stir fry. (Yes, I serve rice with it, "when in Rome") Lastly, this is California where the Mexican influence is strong, I make great tacos and enchiladas. I'm with Lostwordsmith , though not a professional, I enjoy cooking for others more than eating the food myself. But clearly food is important to me evidenced by the number of times I have written about it.
"Dad's Cookin' and Comfort Food - Epulaeryu -Form of the Week" "Ode to Oats - Discussion - Cliche" "An Apple a Day Tools of the Trade - Ripples of Awareness" Sometimes you need a quick, hearty dish that can be expanded to feed unexpected diners. Spaghetti is one of those, especially if you make double sauce and freeze half so you always have it available on short notice. For you busy, working Moms, here a simple, inexpensive, quick recipe I learned from my Mom and translated into a Recipe Poem. Heavenly Hamburger Place one pound lean ground meat with diced whole onion on medium heat. Sauté these lightly in a tall pan next add diced tomatoes from large can. Add canned corn or lima beans, uncooked egg noodles by all means. For 15 minutes cover pot to stew, so not to stick, stir the brew. Pepper and salt to taste, this is a dish that won't go to waste. Last, melt in shredded cheddar cheese. This hearty meal is sure to please. ~~Judi Van Gorder Enjoy! |
