The Lost Robin By Lisa Noe You found a little Robin and saved its life Stole it from the jaws of death, preserving it alright You placed it in a cage and nursed it so well Feeding it hourly and petting its tail You gave it love and cherished it Talked to it like a child, by its side you sit Knowing that you’d have to let it go so it could fly It flew into the apple tree and returned right to your side Once again you fed it and stroked its wings Watching for the three wise cats Who want to pounce upon it and kill it for their dinner You listen to it calling from the tree as it sings Its song is one you recognize you heard it singing while it sat The wild bird, which you saved, makes you a winner Finally, it flew away, but it’s the happiness it brings. The Persepolis Sonnet was devised by Leny Roovers as a blend of Eastern and Western poetic traditions. The first eight lines are structured in the form of a Persian Mathnawi with rhyming couplets aa bb cc dd, and the last six lines are in the Italian pattern efg efg. The Eastern pattern of eleven syllables per line and the Italian iambic pentameter has been loosened up for contemporary poets |
