Theme/Moral It has come down to what will people do to achieve perfection? To achieve the perfect human? What will people sacrifice to make it a reality? Resolution(s) The Guardians unite with the Cathari to take out Joanna and Charles Archibald and also are able to take out all of their science labs. Julessa fights the Feral versions of her family before getting in and killing Joanna. Also, plot on taking out the science labs. |
Initial Refusals/Acceptance There isn't any initial refusals. It starts with Julessa deciding for herself and doing it alone. When she's emotional, she tends to make rash decisions. It isn't until she's getting ready to off on her own that she's confronted by Dax. He tells her that he's going with her and she, at first, says no. But he doesn't want her traipsing across the country by herself after what had happened. Especially since she was clocked in the face with a butt of a gun. Eventually the other three members go along with them seeking out information to help them figure out what is going on. Point of No Return I think the point of no return for Julessa is when she finds out she was part of the experiments that eventually lead to what ended up creating the outbreak. Knowing that she was an unwilling experiment, it makes her fully realize what is involved and it makes her more determined to find out the what and why. |
Protagonists' Life The beginning of the book starts with both of them doing their normal routines as far as being Guardians. Even showing them picking up a small group of people off the side of a road because they're being attacked by Ferals. So we get to be introduced to common "enemy" of every day life. There's the Feral attack and a part where both Julessa and Dax are formally introduced to the Knights as well by being nearly killed. It sets them up for the rest of the story. The Trigger As aforementioned, while Dax and Julessa are outside they hear gun shots. When they go to investigate they realize it's an army of sorts. While they're sneaking, they're discovered by a member of the Knights and nearly shot as they're mistaken for members of the Cathari. They are brought to the attention of their leader, Charles Archibald, but eventually released when proven they aren't the Cathari. This makes Julessa curious to know what is going on and sets them on their eventual quest. |
Protagonists Julessa Thomas, 27 Dax Nesbitt, 38 Flaws Julessa is tough, mentally and physically. Having grown up in the post-outbreak world, she's had to. It also didn't start off on the best foot either. That being said, she's very vulnerable and very emotional. The sad and downtrodden are her achilles heel and the reason she joined the Guardians Jax was seven when the outbreak happened. Along with Brodie, they're the only two who were born prior to the outbreak who remember the life before. It has hardened them both, but Jax has taken a lot of things personal. He hides his emotions well and while he is very caring and empathetic when it comes to those he moves and protects, when it comes to his personal being he's very closed off and often lacks empathy for others. The Goal They want to know two things: Why the Knights are after the Cathari. Why did the Ferals become who they are? Conflict The Knights want to protect their secret and they will take out whomever they need to, under religious pretenses, to make sure that it does. Antagonist Joanna Archibald, 36 She is the un-official (or official, depending on how you want to look at it) leader of the Knights. Premise Five people go up against a large and fast rising religious group to protect what is left of America. |
