“That was not necessary.”

"Maybe it wasn't, but I wanted to do it."

"Listen, I know how tired you get ..."

A loud, cheerful male voice interrupted the two women. "Are my dear Mom and my darling wife at it again? What is it this time?"

"Harold, look, Mamma baked a cake for my birthday!"

Harold entered the kitchen and looked at the gooey chocolate cake sitting next to the oven, the icing saying 'Happy Birthday Alicia'.

"Alicia, Mamma likes doing this. She bakes a cake for me and for Pappa ..."

"But Mamma gets so tired, we could've ordered a cake ..."

There were tears in her mother-in-law's eyes now. "A store bought cake is never like a home-baked one. I just wanted to make you happy."

"Of course you made her happy, Mamma, you made her too happy!" Harold said, with a little laugh. He drew the two women in his life into a big hug.

It was time for another male voice to interrupt. "Why am I left out of this family hug?"

Mamma held her hands out to her husband. "You're in it now," she said, and he joined in. Mamma, in a sudden burst of affection, held his face in her hands and gave him a long kiss on the lips.

Pulling back, he made a comical face at her. "Mamma, in front of the kids?" he cried, in pretended shoci. “That was not necessary.”
