1) If I was able to invent something, I would love to invent a teleportation doorway. Imagine being able to walk through a passage and wind up in another location far away.

I think this is probably one of the most useful futuristic invention across science fiction and fantasy literature.

Imagine different teleportation doorways set up in each country. It would make travel so much simpler. You would be able to travel from New York to Paris in just a couple of steps.

Sadly this is one of the hardest inventions to build and I don't think science is anywhere near creating this. Flying cars seem closer off than this.

2) One thing I would love to change is aging. It would be cool to be immortal without having to age or die. I think all of us would love to remain at our peak health in our lifetime. I'm sure most of us would love for this to change.

This particular change would allow people to live at the peak of their lives without worrying about aging or dying. It would be neat. The one thing we would have to worry about this though would be whether there would be enough resources to support populations of people without death that aging provides. The population would grow exponentially without death.

However it would be cool to be able to not age even if that could ultimately cause additional problems in the long run (at least without additional changes being made),

3) The regrettable thing about time is that it only goes in one direction... forward. If I could change it would love to make it go backwards as well. I would be cool to be able to relive moments in our life or see things before they happened. You could rewind to the past, see thing that happened before, avoid mistakes with the knowledge you acquired the first time around. It would be a really useful ability. You change events and adjust the future in your favor.

This door would up being a wish list *Smile*

1) What background information should I give about myself?

My name is Triton and I use the Pen Name KingsSideCastle Author Icon. My portfolio has a pretty wild mix in it. Sometimes I write lighthearted material while other times I do more serious stuff. In my day job I am a computer programmer and technology analyst.

I tend to be pretty shy and quiet and have nerdy interest. I love Science fiction, comic books and video games.

My only real dislike I can think of in the moment is there is never enough time to complete everything that I hope to be able to do throughout the day.

I am a huge chess fan which is the basis for my WDC handle. I sponsored the Grandmaster Merit badge on this site.

Congratulations on your new merit badge! Thank you for supporting the Writing.Com community with your inspirations, participation and activities. We sincerely appreciate it! -SMs

And I also helped recommend the chess pieces emoticons. *ChessRookB* Feel free to collect my chess trinket below if you haven't already.

I hope to be able to develop a video game one day.

2) For my teammate I picked our team leader Beacon's Anchor Author Icon.

Game of Thrones is my first real interaction with her though we probably had some other interactions in the past as well. I definitely visited her portfolio and guest book previously and we have collected each others trinkets in the past

She graciously allowed me to join the team she was organizing. She likes lighthouses and she runs a review group on Writing.com called "Positive Hearts Reviews GroupOpen in new Window.

She is also organizing a Tomb raider activity which seems like it is going to be really neat. She is really friendly and an awesome teammate.

3) For the opposing team member I picked NaNoNette Author Icon whose team has already made it over the wall and is making their way through Westeros though I maintain Castle Black will hold strong against any invasions. *Door* *Bird*

I knew Annette before this. She is one of Writing.com's moderators. She is also a fellow Star Wars fan and has created one of my favorite trinkets on the site: Baby Yoda aka Grogu. (collectable here: "Trinkets for CollectionOpen in new Window. )

She runs some really awesome activities on writing.com which I try to participate when I have the chance. Currently she has two big activities going on that I am aware of "I Write in 2024Open in new Window. and "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.. She is also responsible for organizing the potato throwing chaos and drinking games during WDC's birthday celebrations.

She participated in one of my Trinket Scavenger hunts as well and was the first person on the site to claim the ultimate prize at the end. Though at least 100 members have attempted this, only 7 others on the site were successfully able make it through to the finish.

I was visiting Ireland and had taken a late night stroll when I heard a noise... A high pitched whistle. It was soft but melodic. It seemed to stop me in my tracks. I could best describe it as the wind hitting against a wind chime but it seemed to vary in cadence almost like a song. It was so beautiful.

My eyes seemed to glaze of over. Something in me wanted to find out where the music was coming from.

Trying to pinpoint the source of the music I wandered the area. Before I knew it, I found myself staring over a cliff. The music seemed to be coming from the lake below.

I stared into the lake. It was as if I could see all my happy memories down there. The whistle echoed from below calling me. It was like an earworm I couldn't shake. My body moved on its own jumping over the edge. I feel the icy water hit me hard as I pass out.

I woke up on shore coughing.

"Easy lad. You just took a dive... you are so lucky you didn't hit the rocks below." A fisherman who had pulled me out out of the lake told me.

"Did you hear the song?" I asked.

"Song?"

"Like the whistling of the wind."

"Ah..." He said seeming to understand. "The evening Sirens be playing tricks on ya!"

"Sirens?"

"We have a saying in the isle avoid the call of the winds at night. They lure men to their death."

The skeptic in me wanted to dismiss his words as folk lore but it was obvious what happened. I had somehow heard the Siren's call and survived it.

I was stuck with a difficult decision. I felt like I was choosing a career... Like the rest of my life would be decided by this.

"Clock's ticking" Serena reminded me.

It didn't help that my fiercest rival was there to offer her feedback on the decisions I was making. Ok... referring to Serena as a rival might be stretching it a bit. She was actually my best friend... just not in this particular moment.

I sighed. "I'm aware...luckily we are not playing bullet chess today."

"I kind of wish we were. If it is taking you this long to make your first move... we are in for a long game."

"Hmm..."

She continues to taunt. "You know it won't change the outcome right?"

"You're so confident that you know how this will play out." I stared at the possibilities in front of me. "So many paths to choose from."

"We both know what you are eventually going to pick."

I rubbed my chin as I considered my next move in my head calculating the odds. I've had a lot of luck with the classic opening. I moved my hand over my King's pawn.

She smirked. "Knew it!"

"It is the most popular opening in Chess."

"Always the same thing ... so boring."

"You're sure you're just not sore about the last few times I used it?"

"Oh big talk. You still have more losses then wins with it."

"Fair point."

"Try to be adventurous... take the road less traveled."

"I feel like there's a Robert Frost reference in there somewhere."

"I was thinking more of the Lauren Alaina song."

"Never heard of it."

"Not surprised there. It would probably inspire you to play more unpredictably."

"You know you'll have your chance to showcase your inventiveness when it is your turn to play as white." I pointed out.
"Besides you could counter differently ...you don't need to move your king's pawn in response well."

"Perhaps... it still limits our game a bit though. I was hoping for a completely different path."

"Hmmm..." Serena idea was a tempting prospect but offered a little bit of a challenge. I had refined my King's pawn game a lot. The first couple of moves were almost the same every time. The problem was that I used it so often that I couldn't really strategize with other openings. Maybe it was time to experiment with movement a little bit more.

She seemed to sense that she was leading "Come on," She coaxed. "Walk on the wild side."

I sighed but acquiesced. "Ok I won't play e2-e4" I agreed.

She smiled.

I moved my Queen's pawn instead and hit my clock.

She facepalmed. "Baby steps I guess!"

Author's notes: This story has a few terms that may need a little bit of understanding of basic chess to follow. I added a short "Chess Pokedex" for any readers that are interested below:

Chess Terms:
*ChessPawnW* Bullet Chess- A game of chess where each player has there clocks set to 3 minutes or less. Players would need to play really quickly to complete the game.

*ChessPawnW* Opening - The moves that a chess player decides to start a chess game with.

*ChessPawnW* The King's pawn opening - One of the most commonly played opening moves in chess. The player moves the pawn in front of the king up two squares (from e2-e4). It allows them to control the center of the board.

*ChessPawnW* The Queen's pawn opening - The second most popular chess opening. The player moves the pawn in front of the queen to start the game. It also gives the player center control of the board.

Word Count: 595 Words

Prompt: Write a story inspired by the Lauren Alaina song "The Road Less Travelled".
