The Blame Game Where have the ordinary people gone, the ones who sleep so quietly, who break no taboos under the sun, and abide by the laws of society, who stick always to the straight and narrow, the saints that play the game, who live and let live with the humble sparrow, and whose answers are ever the same? Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 07.15.23 Prompt: Quotation by CS Lewis - “We meet no ordinary people in our lives.” |
Logocracy A poet once said to me that the world would a better place be, if poets were allowed to rule. Did I mention the man’s a fool? Poets live in a land of dreams and have no truck with financial schemes, but government is a matter of fact, with bribe and wine to the rooftop stacked. Line count: 8 Rhyming couplets For Express It In Eight, 07.14.23 Prompt: Choose 2 to 3 words from the poem, The Makers, by Howard Nemerov, and incorporate them into a poem of your own. |
Dawn Another day, another hadrosaur, thought Fred. Out on the plains, the sun rose, red in the early morning, and Fred’s bleary eye peered from the tree ferns, consumed with dreams of breakfast in his giganotosaurus mind. Nebula Nebula, nebulae, great cloud of gas, nebula that you be, oh, world-filling mass, nebula, nebulae, such a gorgeous emission, it’s no problem to me space has no contrition. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 07.12.23 Prompt: Photo of a nebula in space. Note: These photos taken by our many orbiting telescopes are actually coloured so that we can see how beautiful they are. It’s not my fault that the colours chosen for this one make me think of other gaseous and more embarrassing extrusions. |
Edges England being the land of business, you mind yours and I’ll mind mine, boundaries become our great excess - my edge is here, the rest is thine. Dry stone walls do grace the North, over hill and down in dell, but southerners do find their worth in hedges clipped and tended well. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 07.11.23 Prompt: Write a poem about a hedge. |
Ouch It hurts, but only when I laugh, though even then it comes in spurts, and makes my insides shrink, not half! A cure, I will find one - I must. No sense in feigning motives pure, I think my sense of humour’s bust! Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 07.10.23 Prompt: Write a poem about a time when someone was physically or emotionally injured, fact or fiction. |
Up and Away Oh, Christina, what is this you have designed? Eleven syllables for eleven lines, but not forgetting those pesky rhymes to find, and now add uplifting subject like fine wines, though, being me, something else might come to mind; inflation, strikes me, could expand these confines. I could fill this ditty until it billows; with hot air it becomes as soft as pillows. We both could watch as it flies above our heads, and rides the wind to other places instead, but I fear the landing we must take as read. Line count: 11 Form: Eleventh Power - 11 syllables in each line, rhyme scheme: a-b-a-b-a-b-c-c-d-d-d, uplifting subject For Express It In Eight, 07.08.23 Prompt: As per form. |
Twang Is the present really tense? It depends upon what’s past and all the times that we lacked sense, whenever our fate we cast. Thus we end up tautly strung, like ghee-tars over-tuned, another notch, an added rung, and so our future’s ruined. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 07.07.23 Prompt: Write a tense poem. |
Peringuey’s Adder Dwarf king of the desert dunes Mister Sideways sidles on disappears into the sands melts into the shifting surface unseen eyes that watch and wait careful, gecko, danger lurks that tempting wriggler is no worm Mister Sideways baits the trap. Once I can’t say I was there but I watched it on teevee, the world just stood and stared when Coventry won the Cup. Oh yes, we celebrated like no one did before, cos we knew that it was fated and would never be again!
