Dog dreams in the comfort of the master’s bed,
the lingering warmth an assurance in the midst of absence,
and sleep to take the edge off the empty hours,
to run the phantom fields of expansive summer.
Chasing with the pack the aromatic prey,
smells of grass and ground afloat upon the wind,
loud the breath and panting in the ear,
pounding with the claws in measured, careless tread.
