Hmm... I think we're thinking of different things cause when I edit a "drag n drop" complex item, I gives me a dashed area to drop the item.




... and if I drop an item there, it gives me the option to edit or create a new item from the drag and drop...




Is this not the same view as you're having?

My test item is a static item.
