I'm not entirely sure what "newsfeed option" you're referring. Since you can avoid the newsfeed by not clicking it, I'm going to make the guess that you mean the red notification numbers that show up?

If so, you can eliminate those and reduce the content on your Personal Newsfeed to nothing by using the "Hide This Member" option on each note posted. Click the down facing carat in the upper right corner of any post and you'll see a menu something like this...
                   

Click the "Hide this member" option on one note from each person and you'll end up with an empty newsfeed and not red notifications... while still keeping those people as "favorites" within your favorites listing.
