Getting back to basics of family |
This morning I saw and heard a discussion on television about more stores being open on Thanksgiving day. I've talked about this holiday and other holidays for years with co-workers and family, but have never openly complained about this subject until now. For over 30 years I worked in the retail environment, working many holidays and missing or being late for family dinners. Needless to say, the crazy demanding hours of retail took a toll on my family and marriage. Because I had to work to help and then support my family, I was forced into working weird hours and holidays. Position didn't matter or help, as the higher I went in the company, the more I worked these hours. Because large companies are money hungry, American families are paying the price. When I was growing up, everything was closed on Sunday and people knew to get everything done before then, or suffer the end results. Families planned for shopping around Sunday and that's just the way it was. The American family structure has decayed because there is no longer that set family time. We used to live by the calendar and knew when we would have family gatherings, but now, we live by the DOLLAR and TECH AGE like hamsters on a wheel. How sad that it has come to this, where making money is disguised as convenience for shoppers. |
