Need a little getting started help.

Hi. I've not taken on something like this before, so I aplogize if I need a little hand holding to get started here.
My first question is for Assignment 1, do I write this as s story, describing the contents of the backpack, or will just a list do?
Also, would something like a first-aid kit (I actually keep one of these in my own backpack) count as one item, or more since it contains many items itself?
