You may want to read through Post #3 in "Recreating the Wheel Contest" . That's where I got the history writing idea in my week 2 lessons for this year.
Also (this isn't history exactly, but it fits the treasure hunt aspect of your idea), look up "Letterboxing" on the internet. Letterboxes are hidden by letterbox hobbyists who post clues on the internet- you keep a notebook with stamps from each box you find. You can locate letterboxes to search for in your geographic area, which adds a real treasure hunt to the educational mix. I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds pretty cool, and there are three hidden within ten miles of us!
