As an atheist I really couldn't give any less of a polite damn about the Ten Commandments. However, I do have a healthy respect for the Judeo-Christian ethic (most of our laws are based on this), as well as the more popular eastern philosophies and of course the teachings of Mohammed. I WILL take a couple of pokes at the Ten Commandents though... Here's my major problem... Honor your parents... Let's consider the case of Dave Pelzer. Dave Pelzer repeatedly suffered violent abuse and torture at the hands of his alocoholic mother. Before the age of 12 he had been viciously beaten, stabbed and burned. His mother's disgust for her own son was so severe that she never referred to him by his name, she referred to him as "It". Many of you already know that I am a former police officer. I left the force after a line of duty injury that left me physically incapable of continuing that type of work. In the years that I spent wearing a shield I can tell you this...I investigated numerous cases of child abuse that still cause nightmares to this day, including a case of aggravated sexual assault where a father repeatedly sodomized his own six year old son, the child was diagnosed with full blown AIDS before he was 7. Do these parents deserve to be honored by their children? ***** No real problems with these things...but just the same, it's worth mentioning... I find it ironic that God doesn't want us to murder each other, yet more blood has been spilled in the names of Yahweh, God, Allah, Jesus, etc, etc... than for any other reason in the recorded history of the world. I guess it's okay as long as we're killing for Jesus. Also... I could be wrong on this...like I said, I'm an atheist...but isn't wearing a cross pendant on a chain basically a graven image, or at the very least an idol? Even more ironic is this...Jesus taught us that we should give away our worldly posessions, He taught that a camel had a better chance of passing through the eye of a needle than a rich man had of entering the Kingdom of Heaven....yet the majority of the cross pendants, necklaces and charms I have seen are made of precious metals (gold, silver, etc). Some of them even contain diamonds. Aren't these metals a reflection of wealth? Just because one isn't wealthy, doesn't mean he doesn't have wealth. The money spent on that cross pendant would have been better served sheltering the homeless or feeding the hungry. You know, doing God's work so to speak. Granted, a cross pendant is a long way from a golden calf.....but how far away? ***** As a member of the First Church of Baseball (American League Orthodox), I'm not really up on most of this stuff...but...isn't the Sabbath on Saturday? By the way...I am NOT interested in engaging in a religious debate with ANYONE, so if you are completely pissed off right now, I would recommend counting to 100 instead of sending me an email. You may not like the things I say, but think about it for a second...what have I said here that's not true? "If The Flintstones has taught us anything, it's that pelicans can be used to mix cement." (Homer Simpson)
