I'm by no means a grammar expert and I'm more apt with poetry. If that were a line in a poem, I'd punctuate, primarily because the pause is important and a comma encourages readers to pause momentarily between the two clauses. You did solve the issue by reversing the clauses and perhaps that would be the more professional way of dealing with these types of problems. Is it's possible, over punctuating is simply a sign of a lazy writer? Depending on the punctuation to keep things clear when changing the way things are written would be the clearest option?
I'll get back to reading the various grammar guides I have. Have you read "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss?
