I hadn't gotten an email notification until just now. wow, a lot of responses.

Anyway, here's what I meant about that mayors thing. I'm pretty sure the state was New Jersey. The courts there ordered the legalization of civil unions, it was not voted into law, and now mayors who refuse to perform civil unions can be removed from office and fined $10,000. I'm actually ok with civil unions, but what I've just described is not equal rights, it's domination by the minority at the expense of the majority.
