Here's some sites, for you. It took a little digging but here's what I gather.
Mayors and judges may refuse to perform civil unions but they must also give up performing conventional marriages. To perform marriages and not civil unions can earn them a 10,000 dollar fine and removal from office.
I should have looked that up. Egg on me.
But, I still have a little bit of an issue with that. I believe that what's good for the goose is good for the gander. For example, some parents don't want their kids reading Harry Potter, other parents don't want their kids around the Bible, so if a school library bans both, that's fine. But why forbid these mayors and judges from performing normal marriages if they don't want to perform civil unions, I wonder?
