I it's easy to be misunderstood and inadvertantly offend through e-mail or message boards. We tend to write conversationally but our readers do not get any of the body language or voice cues provided by a real conversation. I've put my foot in my mouth this way a few times, myself, and have fount that a prompt apology does not always clear the air.
