I imagine getting published is like getting to Carnegie Hall: practice, practice, practice. Maybe you could ask your friend what about your story makes it mediocre and then rewrite it. My writing teacher says that one difference between good writers and casual writers is that the good ones revise, revise, revise.
On the other hand, many successful writers could wallpaper their rooms with their rejections before they got published (or so I am told.) So keep on trying if you think you have something good.
I've submitted a piece to my college lit mag but won't hear about it until August or September.
