No, I hadn't heard of scrivener, but a couple of years ago, I tried to use (or more aptly, couldn't use) a similar program.
I now googled scrivener and came up with 1.0 and 2,0 (paid) versions. Also here is the link to video tutorials if anyone wants to take a look. http://www.literatureandlatte.com/video.php
What I do at the moment is this: I have a main folder on my desktop with my protagonist's name. Inside the folder is word files: one for characters, one for plot, one for scenes. I also have a note-pad file for Chekhov's guns. Then I have another folder inside the main folder for research. Each research has its own note-pad or word file. This works for me and I don't have to learn anything new.
I might download the 1.0 version though, after November. At the moment, I don't want to mess with my old-fashioned system.
