Jest as shore as them wild flowers peek outta the ground on the first day of May, the kids in the Holla is awaitin’ at their mailboxes on the second. They’s waitin’ ‘cause that’s when the invites ta the best birthday party of the year come in—the ones from sweet lil' Annie. There was lots of reasons why them invites was so pop’lar: Them double chocolate cupcakes piled high with real fudge icing Them purty little ridin’ ponies what took ya ‘round and ‘round the mulberry bush That crazy ol’ clown what handed out ‘em lil’ round poppers so we’s could throw them at his big ol’ feet jest ta see him dance The magician what could pull hats right outta rabbits’ mouths But good as all them things was, what we’s really come for ev’ry year were the piñata bashin’. Ya never knowed from year ta year jest what kinda piñata would be ahangin’ from the finger point of the maple branch in Annie’s back yard. The best part of the party fun were ta guess jest what it would be. Sometimes the curl on sweet Annie’s forehead were a hint ‘cause it curled a little tighter when your guessin’ were close ta being right. This year it were Orwell Crab ahangin’ from the pointing branch. It were a might surprisin’ considerin’ how gol durn skinny the kid were--but his entails was right plump and his liver were juicy as that there chewin gum.
