Billy pulled a penny from his pocket and plunked it onto the counter.
“That’s a pretty cruddy looking penny,” his friend Joey told him.
“It might be now,” said Billy, “but watch what happens when I put it into this magic solution.” He dropped the coin into a small glass that was half full of a clear liquid. Almost immediately, the penny started to look shinier.
“Wow,” said Joey. “What is that stuff?”
“It’s a mixture of vinegar and salt. The chemical reaction with the copper makes the crud disappear.” Billy pulled the penny out of the solution and rinsed it under the tap.
“That’s pretty cool,” said Joey. “But how much do you think that vinegar and salt cost?”
“I don’t know. Maybe two or three cents?”
“And how much more do you think that penny is worth now than when it was cruddy?”
Billy stared at the floor for a moment. Then he picked up the glass and poured the solution down the drain. “I think I hear your mother calling,” he said.
