I hate it when someone asks a interesting question and doesn't get a reply. This is an old post but here are my worthless opionions...

Yes there are some things that readers expect in a 'genre' but you can mess about with these 'rules' quite a bit

In Romance the format is usualy boy meets girl, they are attracted. Something happens to prevent them getting together. they overcome this and then the bodice ripping occurs at the end. No chancges for LGBT characters and it is now more or less accepted that she can be the one tearing his clothes off at the end.

Romance is pure romance, not to much rude stuff, thats erotica. If you include vampires or whatever then thats 'paranormal romance' and the rules are slightly different again.

Teen romance is all angst and timid. Adults are more certain of themselves (and less irritating).
