PS: Professor Q, I didn't mean to direct my passionate earlier comments about putting yourself out there to you. I think you did do a good job of touching on it. I get passionate because the market definition is the most complained about exercise in the prep, and the one I refuse to eliminate. That impassioned speech was directed at all the people who have ever claimed that their target market is "all readers" and who have generic, unmemorable author platforms that fit the template of what a professional platform should look like and nothing more. I don't know how to get it through their heads that an understanding of your target market, your brand, and how those two things relate, is absolutely critical to success.
In this day of American Idol and the Voice and and AGT, etc, my music students talk about being "discovered." I refer to one of my favorite quotes: "It takes twenty years to become an overnight success." I have no idea who said it, lol. I'm pretty sure I stole it off of social media.
