Questions about story conflicts....

Many of the formulas out there for writing discuss the three conflict premise. Which is basically one major conflict with three attempts to solve it before resolution. I don't know if this pattern will work for my story.

Has anyone heard of other formulas or patterns? Or are you following a different one?

My story is an urban fantasy mystery with a sub plot of romantic entanglement.
