The majority of German immigration to the States occurred during the Victorian age, from about 1840-1880. It's quite likely that they brought the tree with them, but given the American obsession with all things English (we held on to Victorian ideals a LOT more stringently than even the English) and the fact that Victoria was the progenitor of so many other traditions, it's likely Victoria and Albert using one that made it so popular in America. Even outside German communities. -Quaddy
