I think if it can be mistaken as a real location then be as accurate as possible. Once it's truly fictional, you can add exciting landmarks and thoroughfares.
I go ballistic if highway names and exits are wrong because Google Maps exists for non-New Jerseyans. If Tony Soprano gets off the Turnpike at Exit 3 to go to the Bada Bing club, I know he or the author is really lost. (Exit 3 is for Camden/Philly side of NJ, Sopranos is northern New Jersey)
