I just came from ICon, my local ish science fiction convention. And part of this is from a talk I heard from Jim C Hines told us.

Write for you. Write for love not money. And don't be afraid to take risks.

And if you haven't read his books (he's got number13 "Terminal Alliance" coming out in November), you should. Plus he's a super nice man.
