Jim wasn't just a black case. He was a legitimate newbie. He'd only been here a few weeks.

Newbies are expected to make mistakes sometimes... it's easier to redeem yourself from a place of "didn't know any better", particularly if you're as active and visible as Jim has been. If it had been just one little mistake, it probably would have been forgotten more quickly... but it was several big-ish mistakes... so it took a while.

Indeed though... if SM already knows and trusts you, of course he'd be more wary when you mess up.
