I think the sheer quality of writing will undoubtedly daunt anyone, thought that's not an excuse and is actually a good(?) thing. I think (CMIIW) it used to have to be paralel ie, a branch should contain the same things happening in other branch, less the one thing that change and its impact. For me, it's more towards the need to have background details on the characters that holds me back. I know all characters can display different types of personality if and when required ie. Yumi can be painted as a self-serving individual par Chelsea if the conditions are right. It's more of the "base" personality as well as additional details of physical and other important tidbits. For recurring characters, its been done to death, but for less known characters there're scant details.
