Ironically, one of the things that made Three Body Problem unbearable to read for me was the lack of character development. True, the "antagonist" was fleshed out towards the end, but until then, I felt you could've switched all the characters around and nothing would've changed. One was supposed to super smart, one had a lot of power, one smoked cigaretes, that was about all the depth they had. I really liked the speculative element and the ending, though. But in my opinion it was all about the speculative idea alá golden age science fiction.
