Hal was created because I was walking past a far far far left demonstration outside and someone was shouting those slogans at me. I liked the idea, and wanted to give Will someone in Cambridge who could be a potential ally with the weirdness going on. I didn't want it to be a lecturer as that would feel like a Stellae version of Blackwell, so I settled on a mad Che Guevara wannabe. The next question was his combo; Cat was obvious. But in the scene he didn't appear to act - so what was his deal? I decided on Ken because it seemed too good to pass up. And, once I had him as a Ken, the Rube Goldberg-like nature of his fighting style emerged too. Rick had water, Miko had grace, Frank had strength. So what if Hal, fusing creativity and mechanical aptitude, made the environment work for him? Do I like Hal? Yeah, I do. He's not my fave of the Stellae, but he's not my least favorite either ::cough:: Joe ::cough::. But I also think the various roots he's gone down where Will despises him are as in-line with his character as when he turns up and somehow saves the day. |
