"Just surprised other people are willing to go back" I'm not for the same reason I think high school holds a lot of appeal as a setting of fiction in general regardless of medium, country of origin or whatever: it's a weird (and IMO very important) transition period between childhood and adulthood. You start to gain a level of freedom and independence -- you can start driving and getting a job to earn your own money for instance -- but without the responsibility that comes from living as a fully independent adult, generally speaking of course. As a setting in general there's also the (perceived) hierarchy, cliques and stereotypes that can be reinforced, broken or played with as you see fit. That's where people are generally finding their first loves and relationships, where new friends are made and old ones might start going away and something (school itself) to keep everything structured. Besides, considering most of the story takes place in town in and around the high schools with high school characters that's just naturally where things are going to lean. I mean the most prominent adults are, who, the Stellae and Fane? I sure as hell wouldn't want to get mixed up in any of that nonsense. If I went with an adult I'd probably just choose K.C. (she's supposed to be 20, that's an adult...) because who wouldn't want to be a cool musician with a lot of life and career ahead of you? |
