They actually are good at finding them, and at a young age, probably because they do have a really good idea of where and when they are likely to be born. A really good technical explanation might fiddle with the time and place parameters and introduce a semi-random element so that they do have a fairly wide spatio-temporal area to search, in order to account for them not always turning them up instantly, but have to sometimes track down and eliminate alternate candidates.
