I think there's an extent to which writing characters that contain part of yourself is only natural - an extension of write what you know I guess. Though it's better to go for a self depreciatory or metafictional approach, rather than risk writing a self insert Sue character.
Kali's manner of speech is pretty similar to my own. That includes how her accent behaves, though I don't have the same verbal tics. And we share the same lack of confidence in our writings.
Which kind of reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut's recurring author avatar, Kilgore Trout. He's described as having great ideas but being completely lacking the ability to write them. Which, in turn, is I guess why Vonnegut himself gets to appear in one of the chapters in the Book of Masks. Guess which one
