I am feeling a lot of pain for those two characters just by reading your entry. The first thing I thought of was PTSD for them both.
He from 9/11. She from all the personal insults and injuries.

How to resolve this baring of the souls? Hmm. Can go two ways, falling out of each other's arms or falling into each other's arms.
The romantic in me wants the latter.

But to answer your question, I would say yes. To me, this could be the denouement; the final resolution of the intricacies of a plot, as of a drama or novel, the place in the plot at which this occurs.
