A month-long novel-planning challenge with prizes galore. |
If you are stuck, try some of these exercises... - Similar to "What if..." Ask "Why?" This can be directed in general like the What if exercise or specifically at characters. Ask them this as yourself or even as various characters in the story. - Put on some music that fits the mood of the scene you are trying to figure out or the entire story you are plotting. - Browse the net for images related to your characters, scenes, settings, etc. Let the images bring new ideas to mind. - Describe your characters from various POVs. How would each of their parents describe them? Their best friend? Their arch nemesis? The barista at the local cafe or anyone else who is familiar with them, but doesn't really "know" them? A gameshow host introducing them with some interesting life facts? A former teacher or coach? What would their dating profile say? - Write 5 for 5. Write at least 5 answers for each of the following 5 things. What are different ways the story could end? What are 5 twists you could add? What are 5 subplots you could include? What are 5 things that could cause 1 or more of your characters to change and/or grow? What are 5 unexpected things you could add to your story--humor, sadness, romance, suspense, a McGuffin, whatever? - Write a quote, philosophy, life motto, etc. from one or more of your characters. And/or find quotes online that would inspire or connect with them. And be sure to check out my challenge
