Well, Vanessa is one of the two protags, so I tried to flesh out her backstory a bit. :)

As far as cast size, I always prefer to keep it to a minimum. That said, it probably needs to be at least 4 or 5 "named" characters for each crew to make it feel like a large enough group and to cover the different functions on a ship. I need to read up on ship crews to understand what everyone does! LOL!
